Modern Medallion WIP: Fabric Choice

Hello all! Here is the progress on my Modern Medallion Quilt from the the Handstitched class over at Stitched In Color. So far I am having a lot of fun! This class is getting me sewing again which is a bigger gift than I think Rachel could have ever dreamed up. I have learned two new skills so far: applique and mitered corners... but I'd like to talk a bit about my fabric choices today.

I knew right away that I had to have the Henry Alexander super large rose/peony print as my center focal point, so then I worked at pulling fabrics I already had in my stash. This was the color palette I came up with. It was soooo much harder than I'd like to admit to pull fabrics. I hadn't done it in so long. I ended up buying a few extra 1/2 yards off etsy due to the most of what I had being scraps.

Most of the fabrics are from Llama Fabrics and the ever wonderful Sew Me A Song. << I can't sing SMAS praises enough! There was a slight mix up with my fabric and Becca was excellent at quickly responding and getting me the correct fabric. She's a fabric life savior. I highly recommend usingboth of the shops!

I knew that I wanted to keep the focus on the brilliant floral of the center fabric, so I chose colors and fabrics that would accent it. I want my quilt to be more on the cool side of the palette, but I also wanted a few pops to keep the quilt interesting which is where the warm pinks and oranges play in. I have to say picking out all the solids for the medallion really got me inspired though! We're about to add in all of these. I'm still working on some embroidery though, but I can sew on that throughout the piecing of the quilt! Next up for the post: my applique skillz and handwork!

Isn't it funny when...

...the fabric you favorited on Etsy completely randomly with no goals in mind, look like they'd make a nice quilt together? Love it when that happens! Hmmm... now just some convincing that I need more fabric...

Stash and Newbee Quilters

First things first. I will be posting my Tutorial Tuesday soon. I go back to school on Monday, so I've been trying to get last minute cleaning and organizing done. I should have some time to sew soon so I can take you through that great sewing kit tutorial. When I made the first one, I didn't take any pictures of the process. Sometimes it's nice to sew and not worry about blogging it ;)

Secondly, I have joined a bee hive called "Newbee Quilters". It is for those of us who are new to either hives or quilting. I've never been in a hive so I'm quite excited to start! I have my blocked picked out too! If you are interested, go here and sign up. I'm on the waiting list for Hive #6.

On to some new fabric so I'll stop talking hehe

Sew Me A Song loot:

Oh yeah!! I had some fun picking these babies out!

The cutest little mice! It's a light greyish pink for the background.

Cupcakes! Everyone's favorite... if only I could eat them right off of here!

So much new fabric! Now I just need to come up with some projects to make. Are you working on anything currently or gotten in some new stash fabric?

Almost forgot! I got the Janome Hello Kitty sewing machine today! I got it mainly to travel easier with than my Brother, Gerta (which I still love dearly, and is my main machine.) I think I'm going to call my new one Lerla. Great names, huh?

Lovely Saturday... For Sewing

Sneak peak at the fabric I'm planning on using for my dad's quilt! He loves color and flowers.
More to come of that in a later post.

It is absolutely gorgeous outside today! I ended up at Joann's with my 15% off coupon and bought some fabric... Oops! One cut was for the back of my mom's pixilated mini/wall hanging, and the others for my stash (which I'll show you pics of in anther post). I also got some embroidery thread to start hand quilting my mom's gift for Mother's Day... the before mentioned mini. Here's a look at two different fabrics for the binding of it... which do you prefer?

My sister's favorite is this binding fabric.

Please don't look at my toes!

What have you been up to this Saturday?

Sweet Contrary Entry Two

My second entry for Rachel's, of Stitched In Color, mosaic contest entitled Sweet Contrary. The idea is to create a mosaic inspired by the contrasting warm and cool tones of Spring using fabric from Lark Cottons. I. Love. This. Inspiration. On this one, I went more in a red and grey direction, with pops of pink and blue. Pop on over to her post and enter!
